THE EQUIANO PROJECT

The Equiano Society, a UK based non-profitable organisation, is keen to work in partnership with a public museum in Holland on a project that features Olaudah Equiano (aka Gustavus Vassa) who published his autobiography THE INTERESTING NARRATIVE in 1789 in England, and who became a best-selling author.  The project will present an exhibition, conferences, and produce educational material for school children in Holland.

Equiano was a former African slave, seaman, explorer, businessman, writer, and an abolitionist who lived in London. His book, The Interesting Narrative, was published in Holland in 1791, and it includes stories about his visits to St. Eustatius and other Dutch Islands in the West Indies during the 1760s.

The aim of the project is to contribute to the European debate on cultural diversity, and to increase participation as well as access to high quality cultural experiences that will enrich the lives of local, regional and international communities through enjoying and achieving, celebrating diversity and raising aspirations.
